UFC on ESPN 35: Vera wobbles Font several times to earn decision victory

Rob Font faced Marlon Vera in the 5 round main event of UFC on ESPN 35. 5 rounds in that small UFC Apex cage is quite a feat.

The two came out swinging and delivered the entertainment value. Vera tried to mix it up and threw some body kicks in process. Font was confident in his striking and kept to his crisp boxing skill.

Jab seemed to be working on Vera. Round one ended and Font appeared to have a slight edge.

Font missed weight coming into the event so the event was actually at catch weight not at bantamweight.

Vera appeared to make progress in the final minute of round 2 when he wobbled Font. Font ‘recovered’ and pretended to hunt for low single. Vera didn’t catch on early enough to be able to finish but he did pile on some nice ground and pound.

Herzog scolded Vera for rushing into round 3 and made him reset to his corner. Round 3 was a balanced back and forth for the most part with Font and Vera trading blows.

Neither was loading on heavy shots.

In the very last minute of the round Vera wobbled Font visibly with a jumping knee and landed solid elbows. Font looks out of it and is fairly mangled.

Font got dropped once again with slightly over a minute left on the clock.

Vera definitely looked healthier heading into the final minutes of the bout. Font seemed absentminded but still kept throwing well. Bisping remarked at one point that Font’s face looks like a Halloween mask.
