UFC champ Julianna Peña said a 6’3 male line cook beat her up at her old job

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Peña recently shared a humbling experience from her days working as a server before reaching UFC stardom.

During an appearance on the OverDogs Podcast, Peña recounted an incident involving a confrontation with a male co-worker that left her with significant injuries.

“My stupidity thinking that I could beat a man,” Peña began, describing how she engaged in a physical altercation with a kitchen staff member. “I went into the back alley while I was serving and I fought the line cook going at each other for a long time.”

The confrontation didn’t go as the future champion anticipated. According to Peña, she found herself overwhelmed by the size difference between herself and her opponent.

“He dropped me three times. I got dropped, I popped right back up, I went at him again, he dropped me again,” she explained. “I had my eye swollen shut for three days and 11 stitches in my eye.”

Standing at 5’6″, Peña admitted she hadn’t fully considered the advantages her 6’3″ opponent would have in the encounter. Despite her professional training, she was unable to utilize her grappling skills.

“I actually was in my head and be like, ‘No, I’m a pro fighter. I can fight this guy and I’m gonna beat him,'” she recalled thinking. “All I gotta do is get in close and take him down and then I’ll choke him. I couldn’t even do that because the second that I tried to enter and I was getting dropped.”

The aftermath of the incident had professional consequences beyond her injuries. “I got fired and he got to keep his job,” Peña noted, adding that someone witnessed the entire incident without intervening.

The story has resonated widely online, with many commenting on Peña’s honest assessment of the situation and her willingness to acknowledge the reality of physical differences.

“I don’t have any ego to be like, I could beat a man. Learned my lesson,” she concluded. “I don’t want anything to do with fighting dudes.”

Peña has since gone on to reach the pinnacle of women’s MMA, becoming UFC champion and establishing herself as one of the most prominent figures in the sport.

Nunes’ Prediction for Harrison vs Peña

Regarding this weekend’s fight between Peña and Harrison, Nunes predicts a decision victory for Harrison. “I think this is going to go to decision. I feel like three rounds Kayla to Julianna. I feel like later on Julianna can stand out,” Nunes analyzed.

She believes Harrison will utilize her takedowns and cage control while noting Peña’s resilience: “Juliana have a very high survival.”

Nunes acknowledged the stylistic matchup would be interesting, pointing out potential weaknesses both fighters might exploit: “Kayla’s going to use her kick too. Juliana have weak legs. So, I feel Juliana know Kayla have a weak body, too.”

The former champion sees Harrison leveraging her judo background to control the fight: “I see like Kayla doing what she want to do. Take down, you know, like use the cage throw in the cage like using her trips to get Julianna down.”
