UFC announces Charles Oliveira vs Makhachev for the lightweight title

It’s been an eventful morning over at UFC on ABC 3: Ortega vs Rodriguez. A huge PPV main event was just announced. Headlining UFC 280 will be the clash between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev.

Due to Oliveira’s trouble at the weigh in, the two will be competing for the vacant title.

Oliveira was initially reluctant to book the bout on Makhachev’s home turf – Abu Dhabi.

Diego Lima is Charles Oliveira’s longtime trainer and manager. He outlined why a bout with Makhachev in Abu Dhabi wouldn’t make sense in a recent interview with Ag.Fight.

“Now, why go to Abu Dhabi in October? Much earlier than we are used to fighting, two months earlier. Some other time, which is not Charles’s time. Charles doesn’t want to (fight in Abu Dhabi). And I, as Charles’s coach, totally agree with him.”

Oliveira was vocal that he would prefer to wait and face Conor McGregor – for the massive payday.

“If I must choose, it’d be Conor McGregor, as the guy who is putting the money in my bank account,” Oliveira said, at UFC X. “If I’m going to choose, I’m going to choose Conor McGregor.”

“The story with Conor has always been like that,” Oliveira said. “It was the same thing with Dustin Poirier. He always cuts the line and everyone knows that (happens) when Conor is on. He cuts the line. I think I deserve to choose and I’m choosing Conor because of everything I’ve done to make some money for my family and for everything. If I’m going to choose, I’m choosing Conor.”

UFC 280 happens during Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, the third event of a five-year partnership, on Saturday October 22, at Etihad Arena.

Ariel Helwani was the first to break the news with the UFC live broadcast following suit.
