The mixed martial arts community is reeling after a controversial featherweight bout at UFC Fight Night 263 that has triggered refunds from major sportsbooks and scathing criticism from UFC analyst Michael Chiesa.
Isaac Dulgarian suffered a first-round submission loss to Yadier del Valle at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night. But it wasn’t just the defeat that raised eyebrows, it was the manner in which it happened coupled with unusual betting activity that has cast a shadow over the entire affair.

Chiesa, known for his technical breakdowns and candid assessments, delivered a withering critique of Dulgarian’s performance on the UFC post-fight show, dissecting what he viewed as fundamental errors that wouldn’t be expected from a fighter at this level.
The former UFC title challenger focused his analysis on the final sequence, where Dulgarian appeared to abandon basic defensive principles while caught in del Valle’s rear-naked choke attempt.
“If you’re on the main card of a UFC, it’s one thing if you kind of get punched into submission, but a lot of Day 1 mistakes,” Chiesa stated. “You can even hear on the broadcast like, ‘What is this guy doing?’ You peel the top hand. You don’t punch behind you. That is the most useless strike you can possibly throw.”

Chiesa’s analysis highlighted specific technical failures: Dulgarian attacked the choking hand instead of the top hand, threw ineffective strikes from a defensive position, and failed to execute basic escape fundamentals. At one critical moment, del Valle’s top hand was positioned on Dulgarian’s forehead—a vulnerable placement that should have been immediately addressed.
“The top hand is right there for the taking. It gets right on the forehead, and look at this, he doesn’t even try to peel it,” Chiesa observed during his breakdown. “That’s Jiu-Jitsu 101.”
The analyst’s frustration was palpable as he noted the disconnect between Dulgarian’s previous performances and what unfolded against del Valle.
“I’m sitting here on the pre-show hyping you up as a guy that can go into the top five and win fights, and it doesn’t even look like you can fight someone that’s in the bottom of the top 500. I’ve got to be honest here. That was an F- performance. It was absolute trash.”
Adding fuel to the speculation, significant betting line movement occurred before the bout. Dulgarian opened as a -250 favorite, but suspicious wagering patterns shifted the odds dramatically in del Valle’s favor—a red flag that caught the attention of both bettors and bookmakers.

In an unprecedented move, several major sportsbooks, including Caesars and William Hill, have refunded wagers involving Dulgarian, a decision that has only intensified questions about the legitimacy of the contest.

Chiesa maintained his focus on the technical aspects without directly addressing the betting controversy, though he made clear his belief that the performance was historically poor for a fighter of Dulgarian’s supposed caliber.
“I’m not sitting here saying Del Valle is some scrub. The guy is undefeated for a reason, he’s a great fighter. But for a guy in Dulgarian, you don’t even run your feet. Every fight before you shoot and run through these guys. You shot to Del Valle. You let him control you.”
The analyst continued: “You know how to cut the corner, you know to run your feet, you know to re-attack. You know your short offence if you’re caught in a front headlock. You fought like an amateur.”
The situation has drawn comparisons to previous betting scandals in mixed martial arts. Social media observers have noted connections between Dulgarian and former coach James Krause, who was banned from the sport following his involvement in a betting-related investigation.
UFC CEO Dana White has previously delivered stern warnings about the severe consequences for anyone involved in such activities, emphasizing that violations could result in both termination from the promotion and federal criminal charges.
“If I penalize them, you get cut,” White stated when addressing the issue during the Krause investigation. “They’re going to f*cking federal prison. Federal. F*cking. Prison.”

Chiesa concluded his assessment by suggesting that the performance was so far below acceptable standards that it raised questions about Dulgarian’s place on the roster.
“He literally laid an egg, he fought like an amateur. You fought like a guy who doesn’t even belong here. And I hate to just totally crap on the guy, but I’ve got to be honest in my assessment. If that’s how you’re going to fight, there’s other people who are more deserving.”
As the situation continues to develop, the UFC and relevant authorities will likely conduct a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this controversial bout.
