Trump clashes with the Governor of Maine over allowing men in women’s sports: “You’re not getting any federal funding.”

In a tense exchange, former President Donald Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills have entered into a public disagreement over transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports, marking another chapter in the ongoing national debate over this issue.

During a recent public appearance, Trump took a firm stance on the matter, indicating he would leverage federal funding to enforce restrictions on transgender athletes in women’s sports. “You better comply with this otherwise you’re not getting any federal funding,” Trump stated.

Governor Mills responded swiftly to Trump’s remarks with a direct challenge, declaring “We’ll see you in court.” The Democratic governor has consistently supported policies protecting transgender rights in Maine, including in school athletics.

Trump appeared unfazed by the prospect of legal action, responding with “Good. I look forward to that.”

The exchange highlights the growing tension between state and federal approaches to transgender athletes’ participation in sports, particularly at the scholastic level. Maine currently allows transgender students to participate in sports aligned with their gender identity, a policy that has been in place through the Maine Principals’ Association’s guidelines.

The potential withholding of federal funds as a policy enforcement tool has historically been a controversial measure, raising questions about states’ rights and federal oversight in educational policies.

Both leaders appear prepared to defend their positions, suggesting this disagreement could potentially evolve into a significant legal challenge, should Trump return to office. The outcome of such a dispute could have far-reaching implications for similar policies across the country.

CNN’s data analysis, led by senior political analyst Harry Enten, reveals a growing consensus against transgender female athletes competing in women’s sports. A striking 79% of Americans oppose their participation, a sharp rise from 62% in 2021. This opposition spans political lines, with 67% of Democrats, 64% of independents, and 94% of Republicans in agreement. Enten emphasized the rarity of such broad consensus. Meanwhile, President Trump’s executive order strengthens Title IX enforcement, potentially penalizing schools that allow transgender athletes. With over half of voters believing transgender rights have gone too far, the issue remains a major point of contention.
