Former UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson is set to expand his combat sports resume by making his professional boxing debut on August 30th at the age of 41.
Ferguson is known for his unorthodox combat style and relentless pressure in the octagon. He revealed his plans during a recent event where he was experiencing the difference between cage fighting and the traditional boxing ring.
“The experience is awesome. I’m glad it’s not a cage. We got a five rope ring here,” Ferguson shared while observing matches at the venue. “Fighting in shoes in the dorm boxing, man. It’s pretty cool.”
The veteran contender was once on an impressive 12-fight win streak in the UFC. He emphasized that he’s not stepping away from competition despite recent career setbacks.
“When it goes into it, a lot of people use that stupid word ‘retirement.’ I don’t use that word. I’m still competing,” Ferguson stated firmly. “I’m 41. I’m faster than I guarantee every person that’s in here.”
Ferguson’s confidence appears unshaken as he prepares for this new chapter. “My mind and my body are at A+. And right now I am sharp. And I’m getting sharper. Blades and shades, baby. We back.”
While Ferguson confirmed his boxing debut, he remained tight-lipped about his opponent. “I can’t tell you who yet, but I will be boxing,” he teased.
Interestingly, Ferguson isn’t limiting himself to just boxing. He plans to continue his multi-sport approach, including potential returns to MMA.
“It’s not only boxing. MMA also. I’m doing everything,” he explained. “And what I wanted to do was play multiple sports. I might go try out for baseball, for pro.”
The fighter also highlighted his credentials in other combat sports, noting his role in Combat Jiu-Jitsu: “I am actually one of the combat jiu-jitsu pioneers. It was invented at my camp in Big Bear.”
For Ferguson’s fans, this announcement signals that ‘El Cucuy’ isn’t done testing himself in competition, regardless of the arena. As he puts it: “Opportunities exist when we create them. One win changes everything.”
