Recently, the UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai has introduced robotic technology to its state-of-the-art facility, further cementing its position as one of the most innovative training centers in combat sports.
The robots, which were unveiled during a recent demonstration at the 93,000-square-foot facility, represent the latest advancement in the UFC’s commitment to developing talent throughout Asia.
A video shared by the UFC shows the excitement surrounding the new technology, with team members enthusiastically welcoming what was described as “a gift from PSG” before celebrating with pizza.
This technological upgrade comes as no surprise to those familiar with the Shanghai Performance Institute, which opened in 2019 following a $13 million investment by the UFC. The facility, which is three times larger than its Las Vegas counterpart, was designed to serve as the promotion’s Asian headquarters while focusing on developing regional talent.
“We know there is a ton of talent throughout Asia and now we will be able to find them and offer them all the incredible training, nutrition, and physical therapy that UFC fighters are getting in the Performance Institute at our headquarters in Las Vegas, right there in China,” UFC president Dana White said when announcing the facility.
While specific details about the robots’ capabilities haven’t been fully disclosed, they appear to be designed to enhance training methods and provide additional support to the comprehensive programs already in place at the institute.
James Kimball, the UFC Performance Institute’s vice president of operations, previously highlighted the importance of the Shanghai facility in talent development. “In terms of the model and what’s different… in Vegas, obviously we’re working with athletes that are currently on the UFC roster. That facility will be available to athletes currently on the UFC roster, but predominantly we will be developing talent.”
The robots join an already impressive array of technology and staff at the Shanghai PI, which employs more than 30 professionals working across various disciplines, including strength and conditioning, nutrition, physical therapy, and MMA-specific coaching.
With 36 million UFC fans in China alone, according to the organization’s internal data, the investment in advanced technology like these training robots demonstrates the UFC’s commitment to growing its presence in the region while providing athletes with unparalleled resources.
