Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has revealed the surprising method behind his dramatic physical transformation for his upcoming movie role. The Hollywood superstar is drastically reducing his protein intake to achieve the frail appearance needed to portray a 70-year-old eccentric character in the movie “Lizard Music.”
Johnson will play the “chicken man,” a whimsical elderly character whose best friend is a 70-year-old chicken. This role represents a complete departure from his typically muscular, action-hero persona. To authentically portray this character, The Rock has started on an unconventional approach that goes against everything fitness enthusiasts believe about muscle maintenance.
“It means eating less chicken,” Johnson explained in a recent interview about the film. Given that his character befriends a chicken, consuming poultry would seem inappropriate for the role. This dietary shift represents a significant change for someone known for consuming 6,000 to 8,000 calories daily, including massive protein-rich meals.
The transformation strategy focuses primarily on reducing protein consumption. While fitness experts typically recommend one gram of protein per pound of body weight for muscle maintenance, The Rock is deliberately cutting this down significantly. For someone of his size, this means dropping from approximately 250 grams of protein daily to much lower levels.
However, fitness expert Greg Doucette questions whether this approach alone could produce such dramatic results. Even reducing protein intake to 0.5 grams per pound of body weight would still exceed the Recommended Daily Allowance for protein. A complete shift to a vegan diet, while eliminating traditional protein sources like chicken breast, egg whites, and steak, would likely not result in the massive muscle loss needed for the role.
The physical transformation required is substantial. Johnson must convincingly portray someone decades older and significantly frailer than his current impressive physique suggests. At 52, he still maintains the muscular build that made him famous, looking nothing like the elderly character he’s preparing to embody.
This role follows his previous transformation for “The Smashing Machine,” where he successfully altered his appearance for another demanding character. The upcoming “Lizard Music,” based on Daniel Pinkwater’s novel, presents an even greater challenge as Johnson must shed the powerful presence that defines his screen persona.
The low-protein approach represents just one aspect of what’s likely a comprehensive transformation plan. Combined with reduced training intensity and overall caloric restriction, this dietary strategy aims to create the authentic appearance of a man in his seventies.
