In the heat of competition, combat sports sometimes find themselves battling more than just their opponents. For Bryce Mitchell, one of the most memorable moments of his UFC Vegas 79 bout against Dan Ige had nothing to do with grappling or striking. It was all about charm, quick thinking, and what he calls his “natural gift.”
Mitchell talked about the incident in a recent interview the Overdogs podcast. During the intense featherweight clash, Mitchell sustained significant damage to his eye, prompting officials to send a medical professional into the octagon to assess whether he could safely continue.
What happened next has become the stuff of UFC legend, a story Mitchell himself loves to recount with characteristic humor and self-awareness.
“They sent a female eye doctor into the cage,” Mitchell recalled. “Dude, I put that Southern draw on her.”
The Arkansas native knew he was in trouble. His eye was visibly damaged, and the doctor meant business. In that crucial moment, Mitchell had to make a split-second decision about how to handle the situation. His southern charm became his secret weapon.
“She said real quick, what color are my eyes?” Mitchell recounted. His response was calculated and quick: “I said real quick, beautiful.”
It was a bold move, one that could have easily backfired. The doctor wasn’t there to be flattered—she had a serious medical evaluation to perform. “She didn’t smile, but I just felt that hit her spirit,” Mitchell explained.
The doctor pressed him again, demanding a real answer. Mitchell, having bought himself precious seconds, correctly identified them as blue.
The verdict came swiftly from the referee: “OK, honey, I’m going to let you go.”
Mitchell attributes his ability to continue to divine intervention. “That was Jesus watching me, because I’m telling you, if they had sent that dude in, that dude would have stopped the fight,” he said.
Whether it was charm, luck, or simply passing the required medical test, Mitchell got his wish. He continued competing and ultimately secured a unanimous decision victory over Ige, with judges scoring the bout 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28 in his favor.
The win was particularly meaningful as it allowed Mitchell to bounce back from his first career loss.
For Mitchell, his self-described ability to “sway these women” became just as important as his grappling skills that night.
