Former sumo champion Takanobu Sato, known in the ring as “Takakeisho,” has stunned fans worldwide with his remarkable physical transformation since retiring from the sport last September.
The 28-year-old athlete, who dominated Japanese sumo for a decade from 2014 to 2024, has reportedly shed over 100 pounds in just eight months following his retirement – a change so dramatic that many followers barely recognize him.
During his illustrious career, Takakeisho claimed four Grand Sumo championships and maintained the prestigious Ozeki rank for five years. Standing at 5-foot-9, he competed at weights ranging between 350-410 pounds in his final years as a professional wrestler.
Health challenges ultimately cut his career short. The champion was forced to withdraw prematurely from 10 of his final 30 tournaments due to various injuries, likely exacerbated by the physical demands of maintaining his competitive weight.

When asked about his weight loss secret, Takakeisho revealed a surprisingly simple approach: eating less.
“I never had a big appetite. When I was an active wrestler, if I let my guard down I would lose weight quickly. I had to weigh myself every night and every morning and adjust my weight accordingly,” he explained.
This revelation provides fascinating insight into the rigorous dietary regimen of professional sumo wrestlers, who reportedly consume approximately 10,000 calories daily to maintain their fighting weight. For Takakeisho, retirement meant freedom from this demanding nutritional schedule.
While some fans speculate that supplements or medications might have contributed to his transformation, fitness experts note that dramatically reducing caloric intake can indeed produce substantial weight loss results, especially for someone transitioning away from the extreme dietary requirements of sumo.
The former champion’s journey highlights the physical sacrifices made by sumo wrestlers during their careers and demonstrates the body’s remarkable ability to transform when lifestyle factors change. As Takakeisho continues his post-sumo life with a healthier physique, his transformation serves as an inspiring reminder of the body’s adaptability.
