Strongman Brian Shaw opens up on life threatening medical issue that’s haunting him this past year

Four-time World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw has revealed the harrowing medical journey that has quietly consumed his life for the past two years. In a video from Dubai, Shaw opened up about a life-threatening leg infection from 2023 that doctors warned could result in amputation – and the ongoing complications that continue to plague him today.

“Back in 2023, I had an extremely bad leg infection where they were talking about potentially cutting my leg off,” Shaw explained while packing for his medical trip to Dubai. Despite overcoming the initial crisis and returning to compete at World’s Strongest Man and his final competition at Strongest Man on Earth, the aftermath has been relentless.

The infection’s lingering effects have transformed Shaw’s daily life into what he describes as “a quiet battle.” The affected leg remains chronically swollen and uncomfortable, requiring him to sleep with it elevated for relief.

“It’s just been like this. It stays bigger, you know,” Shaw shared, describing how the swelling worsens throughout each day.

Shaw’s determination to find a solution led him down countless treatment paths. “I have pretty much tried every single treatment that I thought might work,” he revealed. His journey included everything from non-invasive massage therapies to extremely painful procedures he described as “ridiculously painful” and ineffective.

The situation reached a concerning turning point over the Fourth of July – his 10-year anniversary – when Shaw found himself back in the hospital with another leg infection. “That made me even more concerned,” he admitted, acknowledging that stress likely contributed to the setback.

Shaw’s search for answers eventually led him to Dr. Khan in Dubai, recommended by powerlifting legend Ed Cohen.

“Dr. Khan seemed super confident that this will be able to help me, which made me more confident,” Shaw explained. The procedure involved 11 injections of 40 million mesenchymal stem cells directly into the affected tissue, along with an IV treatment designed to improve his vascular system.

During the ultrasound examination, medical staff discovered that while Shaw had no visible scarring, his leg tissue showed chronic swelling and inflammation. “The main root of problem is the fat diffusions,” the medical team explained, identifying compromised veins and tissue dysfunction as key issues.

Following his treatment, an optimistic Shaw expressed gratitude to the medical team and hope for others facing similar battles. “This has been a tough journey the last couple years,” he reflected. “I hope that this video can help out other people out there that are maybe going through the same thing.”
