Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal has captured the sports world’s attention with his ambitious vision for a crossover combat sports event that would pit NBA stars against NFL players in the boxing ring.
The announcement came during the highly-watched Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul broadcast on Netflix, where O’Neal appeared alongside NFL icon Rob Gronkowski. The four-time NBA champion revealed his grand plans for inter-league competition.
“Me and Gronk gonna put together NBA vs NFL,” Shaq declared during the broadcast. “Coming soon. I’m talking boxing, football, basketball.”
The concept immediately sparked curiosity from Gronkowski, who sought clarification on the format. “Are we talking current players vs retired players or active players vs active players?” the former Patriots tight end asked.
O’Neal’s response demonstrated the flexibility of his vision: “Either or, but we’re gonna do it.”
The conversation took an entertaining turn when O’Neal revealed the personal dynamic that inspired the concept. “I just thought of it because me and Gronk are good friends, and he challenged me to a fight,” Shaq laughed.
Gronkowski’s playful response showed he was ready to embrace the competitive spirit: “I’m not really your friend. I’m ready to fight your a**.”
O’Neal himself is preparing to return to combat sports. The NBA Hall of Famer recently accepted a boxing challenge from Charlie Mack, Will Smith’s former bodyguard and a notable figure in the music industry. The match stems from what both men describe as a long-standing rivalry.
“Hey celebrity boxing and Charlie Mack, I accept,” O’Neal stated in a video posted to his Instagram account. “You name the time and place, I’ll be there. Diesel don’t run from nobody.”
Mack responded enthusiastically to the acceptance, sharing a promotional poster and promising that additional details would be forthcoming. “So I call Big Fella @shaq out yesterday & he accepted as I knew he would!!!!” Mack wrote. “We’ve been talking about it way too long, now we MUST get it ON!!!!!!!! The details will come soon from The Best Celebrity Boxer promoter.”

O’Neal’s involvement in combat sports spans over two decades, beginning with mixed martial arts training in 2000. Throughout his post-basketball career, he has maintained connections to various combat disciplines, including professional wrestling appearances with major promotions.
His television show “Shaq Vs.” previously showcased his willingness to compete against elite athletes in their specialized sports, including memorable sparring sessions with boxing champions Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley, where he lost both encounters via unanimous decision.
The 53-year-old former Lakers center has previously expressed interest in high-profile matchups, including potential bouts with towering kickboxer Choi Hong-man and controversial figure Jose Canseco, though these proposed contests never materialized.
