UFC Bantamweight Champion Sean O’Malley experienced what he describes as an “eye-opening” moment when he saw fellow fighter Cody Garbrandt sporting braided hair and face tattoos, a look eerily similar to O’Malley’s signature style.
In a candid interview with Ariel Helwani, O’Malley shared his visceral reaction to seeing Garbrandt’s transformation, which left him questioning his own distinctive appearance.
“I saw Cody Garbrandt saying I looked like sh*t against Marab,” O’Malley began, acknowledging comments Garbrandt had made about his performance. “That dude looked sharp, blast fire. That’s all I’ll say.”
But what truly rattled the champion wasn’t Garbrandt’s criticism of his performance—it was the visual mirror Garbrandt had seemingly become.
“You know what was annoying is like when I saw his hair was braided and he’s got those face tattoos, I was like, f**k, that’s how people see me,” O’Malley confessed. “And it was just so embarrassing. I was like, oh God, I need to f**king get a new look.”
The realization appeared to spark something of an identity crisis for “Sugar” Sean, who has built his brand around his colorful hair, tattoos, and flamboyant persona. Seeing these elements reflected back at him through another fighter seemed to give O’Malley pause.
“That was embarrassing,” he reiterated. “I was like, holy sh*t. That was an eye opener. I was like, God d*mn it.”
What makes this situation particularly interesting is the history between these two bantamweight competitors. While they haven’t faced each other in the octagon, there has been tension brewing between them for some time, with both fighters occasionally taking verbal jabs at one another in interviews and on social media.
Garbrandt’s recent face tattoo reportedly came from an unexpected source of inspiration. During a media appearance, the former champion revealed he got the facial ink on impulse while getting his armpit tattooed, simply to escape the pain of the original session.
Whether Garbrandt’s new look was an intentional mirroring of O’Malley’s style or merely coincidental remains unclear. What is evident, however, is that it has given O’Malley reason to reconsider his own image.
For a fighter whose marketing appeal has been so closely tied to his distinctive appearance, this moment of self-reflection could potentially signal a new chapter in the evolution of Sean O’Malley’s public persona.
