Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey’s highly anticipated biographical film has found its director in Augustine Frizzell, the acclaimed filmmaker behind HBO’s “Euphoria” pilot and the Sundance hit “Never Goin’ Back.”
The Netflix production, based on Rousey’s bestselling memoirs “My Fight/Your Fight” and “Our Fight,” represents a remarkable journey from the octagon to the writer’s room for the trailblazing athlete. What makes this project particularly compelling is Rousey’s personal involvement in crafting the screenplay – a process that began with her working in WME’s story group department to master screenwriting fundamentals.
After reviewing dozens of scripts from other writers, Rousey took matters into her own hands and penned the entire screenplay herself in just seven days. The speed and quality of her work left her agents stunned, unable to believe they were dealing with a first-time screenwriter. Chernin Entertainment quickly moved to secure the project after the script hit the market.
The search for a director was intentionally focused on finding a woman to helm Rousey’s story, and Frizzell emerged as the perfect match after impressing everyone involved with her vision for the film. The director’s connection to the material runs deep – she had already read both of Rousey’s memoirs before being approached for the project and immediately knew this was an opportunity she had to pursue.
Frizzell brings unique qualifications to the role beyond her directorial expertise. As someone who trains in Muay Thai during her spare time, she possesses an intimate understanding of the combat sports world that shaped Rousey’s career. This insider knowledge, combined with her admiration for Rousey as both an athlete and person, creates an authentic foundation for bringing the champion’s story to screen.
Netflix’s involvement adds another layer of confidence to the project. The streaming giant has worked extensively with Frizzell, recently tapping her to direct four episodes of the upcoming series “The Boroughs,” a high-priority production for the platform created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews with the Duffer Brothers producing.
The path to this Netflix collaboration has been winding. Paramount originally acquired rights to Rousey’s first memoir back in 2015, but multiple studio regime changes eventually led to the rights lapsing. Netflix executive Michelle Evans, a longtime Rousey admirer, championed bringing the project to the streaming service.
The expanded scope of this biopic sets it apart from what might have been produced years ago. Rousey’s second memoir, “Our Fight,” provides additional depth and vulnerability to her story, including candid revelations about personal struggles following career setbacks, her history with concussions that predated her MMA career, and complex professional relationships that shaped her journey.
Frizzell’s rising star in Hollywood began with her feature directorial debut “Never Goin’ Back,” which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival before A24 released it later that year. The film earned recognition with a nomination for the John Cassavetes Award at the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards. Her television work includes not only the “Euphoria” pilot but also the StudioCanal/Netflix film “The Last Letter From Your Lover.”
