In a heated exchange, former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines has issued a bold challenge to ex-ESPN host Keith Olbermann after he criticized her athletic accomplishments and political stance.
The controversy began when Olbermann responded to a Fox News clip featuring Education Secretary Linda McMahon, who claimed that Gaines “would have clearly won” her race if she hadn’t competed against transgender athlete Lia Thomas. Olbermann took to X (formerly Twitter) to dispute this assertion.
“[Riley Gaines] finished 85th in the Olympic Trials,” Olbermann posted. “She finished tied for 5th in the only race including a transgendered athlete. If there had been none she MIGHT have finished tied for 4th, or had 5th place to herself.”
Gaines, a 12-time NCAA All-American who tied for fifth place with University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas in the 2022 NCAA 200-yard freestyle championship, didn’t let the criticism go unchallenged.
“I placed 85th at Olympic trials when I was 15/16,” Gaines fired back. “I was one of the youngest there. And I placed 5th *in the nation* in a sport measured in .01s of a second without going a best. Would you say the 5th best college football player is objectively bad at their sport? No. You’re just a misogynistic pig & an old, deranged man with a terminal case of TDS who can’t hold down a job.”

Taking the dispute to another level, the 25-year-old conservative activist challenged Olbermann to put his words into action by racing her in the 200-yard freestyle. According to Fox Digital, Gaines proposed that the competition take place at a location of Olbermann’s choice before August 31, with proceeds going to a charity selected by the winner.
Olbermann, 66, appeared to accept the challenge with a taunting response, calling it a “brilliant idea” while adding, “A 66-year old man with an arthritic left knee and chronic stress fractures in the right foot… Somebody you could finally beat!”
This public dispute occurs amid ongoing national debate about transgender athletes in women’s sports. Gaines has become a prominent voice on this issue since her 2022 race with Thomas, a biological male. Earlier this year, she supported President Donald Trump’s “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sport” executive order, which uses Title IX to ban transgender girls and women from participating in female school sports activities.
The controversy gained further momentum following recent events in California, where AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete, won women’s long jump and triple jump competitions at a high school track meet. The situation sparked outrage among many, including Gaines, especially after one of Hernandez’s opponents staged her own podium ceremony following the official one.
