Piers Morgan walks back Jake Paul comments faced with a lawsuit

Television personality Piers Morgan has issued a comprehensive public apology to Jake Paul after facing the prospect of legal action over comments questioning the legitimacy of the YouTube star’s boxing career.

The dramatic reversal came just days after Paul retained high-powered attorney Alex Spiro, who commands approximately $3,000 per hour and represents A-list clients including Elon Musk, Jay-Z, Alec Baldwin, and Naomi Osaka. The move signaled Paul’s serious intent to address what he considers damaging and false statements about his professional boxing endeavors.

Morgan’s lengthy mea culpa, posted to his 8.9 million followers on X, represented a significant about-face from his previous stance. “I posted a few weeks ago that Jake Paul’s boxing career has been ‘boring staged bulls**t,'” Morgan admitted in his statement.

The broadcaster then attempted to clarify his original intent, explaining that his criticism was aimed at Paul’s choice of opponents rather than suggesting anything unethical. “What I meant is that his fights have been predominantly against older, past-their-prime opponents, which may be lucrative for both sides, and may have entertainment value, but don’t reveal how he stacks up against currently ranked boxers and therefore are not a good look for the sport,” Morgan wrote.

Crucially, Morgan explicitly distanced himself from any implications of impropriety, stating: “I did not intend to suggest that the outcome was predetermined and certainly didn’t mean to suggest anything illegal.”

Paul’s manager and MVP co-founder Nakisa Bidarian previously emphasized the substantial damage such accusations inflict on Paul’s professional relationships during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.

“When you definitively state that Jake is putting on staged or rigged fights, that’s just defamation, and you’re causing substantial damage to his business, to MVP’s business, and something that’s 100 per cent not true,” Bidarian declared.

The executive highlighted how these persistent rumors affect Paul’s partnerships with major entertainment and corporate sponsors. “We’re having to have conversations with our partners that are just unjustifiable,” Bidarian explained, referencing relationships with platforms like DAZN and Netflix, as well as brand partnerships with companies such as Celsius.

Bidarian also revealed that Paul’s legal team is prepared to take action against multiple individuals making similar claims. “Our legal representation is looking at multiple individuals to go after,” he warned.

The controversy gained particular attention following Paul’s highly publicized November bout against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, which streamed live on Netflix and attracted over 108 million viewers worldwide. Despite Paul’s 12th professional victory in June, various media personalities and celebrities have continued to question the authenticity of his matches.

Spiro’s involvement appears to have been decisive in prompting Morgan’s swift retraction. The attorney has built a reputation for aggressively defending his clients’ reputations and has achieved notable successes in high-profile cases, including his pivotal role in Baldwin’s defense following the 2021 ‘Rust’ incident, where he helped uncover prosecutorial misconduct that led to dismissed charges.

In his apology, Morgan also acknowledged potential future developments in Paul’s career that could address some of his original concerns. “But if reports are correct that Jake is now in negotiations with Anthony Joshua, that would obviously be a seriously credible bout against one of the best heavyweights in the world,” he noted.

The television host concluded his statement by extending an olive branch to Paul, inviting him to appear on his show “Uncensored” to discuss the matter directly. “Jake is welcome to come on Uncensored to discuss this, and verbally slug it out with me, anytime,” Morgan offered.

But in a follow-up post on X, Morgan denied issuing any apology, stating instead that he merely clarified his remarks. With legal teams circling and reputations on the line, it remains to be seen whether this is the end of the matter.
