One time UFC title contender gets destroyed by UFC fans after he reveals plans to start a ‘regional slap competition’

Former UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has revealed his ambition to launch a regional slap competition, potentially partnering with the UFC to air it on their subscription service. Smith envisions his venture as a developmental league for the UFC’s Power Slap, similar to how LFA functions for UFC stars.

“You know what kind of crazy-a-s people I could find in Nebraska that would do that s–t,” Smith enthusiastically explained during an appearance on The Helwani Show. He sees himself taking on the role of promoter and owner, standing front and center selling the fights.

The MMA community’s reaction to Smith’s proposal has been decidedly mixed. Some fans view it as a shrewd business move, with one supporter calling it

“a genius idea on paper.”

Another praised Smith’s foresight, suggesting he’s

“ahead of his time”

by positioning himself to become a feeder organization for the UFC’s Power Slap.

However, critics have been far more vocal. Many questioned Smith’s judgment, with several suggesting the concept demonstrates poor decision-making.

“More proof that being punched in the head for a living doesn’t lead to the greatest minds,”

one detractor remarked.

Others expressed concern about the very nature of slap fighting as a legitimate sport, calling it

“less skilled”

than traditional combat sports. The financial viability was also questioned, with cynics suggesting potential competitors might receive minimal compensation for their efforts.

While Smith could pursue the venture independently, he indicated a preference for UFC involvement, specifically to secure distribution through their Fight Pass streaming service. His enthusiasm for the project was evident as he discussed the opportunity to showcase unique talent from his home region.

Despite the polarized reception, Smith appears determined to explore this unconventional path in combat sports entertainment. Whether this represents a savvy business opportunity or a misguided venture remains to be seen as the former title challenger looks to make his mark outside the octagon.
