NASCAR driver KO’s himself trying to get out of his car

What should have been a moment of pure triumph turned into a medical emergency at Watkins Glen International on Saturday when 19-year-old Connor Zilisch suffered a serious injury while celebrating his NASCAR Xfinity Series victory.

The JR Motorsports driver had just secured his seventh career win at the Mission 200 at The Glen when disaster struck. As television cameras rolled and fans cheered, Zilisch attempted to climb out of his #88 Registrix Chevrolet through the window to stand on the roof in traditional victory celebration fashion. Instead, the moment took a terrifying turn.

“Oh, he went down on the cage stand. Oh my gosh, he fell,” came the surprised commentary as viewers watched the young driver tumble headfirst in what appeared to be a devastating fall.

The celebration in Victory Lane came to an abrupt halt as Zilisch remained motionless after landing hard on his neck. Medical personnel rushed to the scene, fitting him with a neck brace before carefully loading him onto a stretcher and into an ambulance bound for the infield care unit.

The scene left spectators and television audiences surprised. NASCAR quickly provided reassurance that Zilisch was conscious and communicating with medical staff during transport, but the severity of the fall had everyone holding their breath.

Hours later, Zilisch himself provided the update fans had been desperately waiting for. Taking to social media, he revealed the extent of his injuries while expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support.

“Thank you everybody for reaching out today. I’m out of the hospital and getting better already,” he wrote. “Thankfully, CT scans for my head are clear, I just have a broken collarbone. Thankful for all the medics for quick attention and grateful it wasn’t any worse.”

The news came as a relief to the NASCAR community, which had watched in horror as one of the sport’s rising stars suffered what could have been a career-ending or life-threatening injury during what should have been one of his career’s highest moments.

Zilisch had dominated the weekend at Watkins Glen, capturing the pole position with a qualifying time of 1:10.884 that left the competition trailing. Shane van Gisbergen finished second in qualifying with a 1:11.446, while Tanner Gray rounded out the top three at 1:11.529.

The dramatic conclusion to Zilisch’s victory overshadowed what had been an impressive performance from the teenager, who was scheduled to make his fourth Cup Series start on Sunday at the Go Bowling at The Glen race. NASCAR and JR Motorsports have yet to announce whether he will be cleared to compete following his injury.
