Michael Chandler shares a video of support for Ben Askren during tough times

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler delivered a powerful message of support to his friend and mentor Ben Askren, who is currently facing significant health challenges.

Chandler, visibly moved in the footage, revealed a meaningful coincidence that prompted his message. “It is no coincidence that I just had my mom and dad bring my All-American plaque home this past weekend,” Chandler explained, holding up his wrestling accolade from 2009.

The timing of receiving this memento seemed to inspire Chandler’s heartfelt tribute to the man he credits for his success. “I just want to let you know that I hope you know that the main reason why I have this, the main reason why I became an All-American, the main reason why some little guy from High Ridge, Missouri who did not believe in himself, did not believe that he deserved to stand on that podium, the main reason is you,” Chandler said.

The emotional message highlights the profound impact Askren has had on Chandler’s career and personal development. Askren, a former Olympian and mixed martial arts champion, has been battling severe pneumonia that resulted in a double lung transplant and weeks on a ventilator. Reports indicate Askren experienced multiple cardiac events during his 45-day medical struggle and lost over 50 pounds.

“I love you so freaking much, man. I look up to you. I admire you. I’m fighting with you. I am praying for you and you’ve got so many people that love you, man,” Chandler continued, his voice breaking with emotion.

The video demonstrates the deep bonds formed in combat sports that transcend competition. Chandler and Askren, both accomplished wrestlers before their MMA careers, share a connection that dates back to their collegiate days.

Chandler concluded his message with words of encouragement: “Keep on fighting. Keep on fighting. We love you, Ben. God bless. I’ll see you at the top.”

The outpouring of support for Askren has been widespread throughout the combat sports world, with numerous athletes reaching out during his health crisis. Askren himself recently expressed gratitude for this support, stating, “The thing that was most impeccable to me was all the love I felt.”
