UFC star Michael Chandler recently shared the touching story behind his and his wife Brie’s decision to adopt their children. The lightweight contender opened up about this personal journey during an appearance on the Ultimate Human Podcast with Gary Brecka.
Chandler recounted a pivotal moment that occurred early in his relationship with Brie. While enjoying a relaxed afternoon at a dog park in San Diego, Brie expressed her desire to become a mother through adoption. This caught Chandler off guard, as he had never considered adoption before. However, he quickly embraced the idea, stating, “I’ll do anything to marry you. I’m completely on board with that.”
The fighter explained that Brie’s passion for adoption stemmed from her teenage years when she participated in intercity missions in Columbia, Missouri, and spent time in Jamaica for similar causes. This background had instilled in her a deep-seated desire to provide a loving home for children in need.
After dating for 11 months and a five-month engagement, the couple tied the knot in 2014. They welcomed their first adoptive son, Hap, in 2017, followed by their second son, Ace, in 2022. Chandler emphasized the joy and fulfillment that adoption has brought to their lives.
The Chandlers’ decision to adopt has not been without its challenges and discussions. Some have raised questions about the ethics of transracial adoption, citing concerns about cultural identity. Chandler has addressed these issues, acknowledging the importance of having open conversations about race and heritage as their children grow older.
“Obviously, part of it, too, is if I would have done that interview and my sons were 14 and 11, it’s a little bit different,” Chandler explained in a separate interview. “I’ve got a 2-year-old, and I’ve got a 7-year-old. So maybe that question being answered to me five years from now or… you know, my son Hap now is 7, so, we’re getting toward that direction.”
Despite the occasional controversy, many in the MMA community have praised Chandler for his generous act. The fighter remains focused on providing the best possible life for his sons and continues to navigate the joys and challenges of parenthood with love and dedication.
