Mark Cuban Reveals He Nearly Clashed with Dana White Over Fedor Emelianenko

In a recent appearance on the FLAGRANT podcast, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban shared a revealing anecdote about a tense encounter with UFC CEO Dana White. The incident, which occurred years ago in Las Vegas, centered around Russian mixed martial arts legend Fedor Emelianenko.

Cuban, known for his business acumen and sports investments, recounted how he and White found themselves in a heated exchange. “We were at a club in Vegas and just started talking to each other for whatever reason,” Cuban explained. The root of their disagreement stemmed from Cuban’s foray into the MMA world, which put him in direct competition with the UFC.

At the time, Cuban was working to organize fights featuring high-profile athletes who weren’t under contract with the UFC. Emelianenko, widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights in MMA history, was among those fighters. This move apparently didn’t sit well with White, who had long sought to bring Emelianenko into the UFC fold.

The situation escalated quickly, with both men engaging in a verbal sparring match. However, Cuban emphasized that despite the heated moment, he and White now maintain a cordial relationship. He even praised White’s strong work ethic in building the UFC into the powerhouse it is today.

Emelianenko, the catalyst for this confrontation, never did sign with the UFC despite his impressive 40-7 professional record. White later explained the failure to sign Emelianenko, stating, “We gave it a shot and it didn’t happen.” He also expressed skepticism about Emelianenko’s status as one of the greatest of all time, citing his knockout loss to Dan Henderson, a fighter from a lower weight class.

The Russian fighter went on to compete in various other promotions before retiring in 2023 after a career spanning more than two decades. While he never graced the UFC octagon, Emelianenko’s legacy in the sport remains significant, having been a key figure in the rise of MMA’s popularity during the 2000s.

This revelation by Cuban sheds light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the sports entertainment industry, where business interests and personal relationships often intersect in unexpected ways.
