Mackenzie Dern has etched her name in combat sports history, becoming the first woman ever to capture a UFC title in Abu Dhabi. At UFC 321, the Brazilian-American defeated Virna Jandiroba to claim the strawweight championship.
“Abu Dhabi has a special place in my heart and I feel like Abu Dhabi, I made history for Abu Dhabi, too, you know,” Dern said during the post-bout press conference, visibly emotional after achieving her long-pursued dream.
The victory carries extraordinary weight beyond the historic venue. Dern now stands as the first woman to hold both an ADCC championship and a UFC title, joining only three men who have accomplished this rare feat.
She also becomes just the second person in history—after Fabricio Werdum—to win world titles in IBJJF, Abu Dhabi World Pro, ADCC, and the UFC. The achievement comes with poetic timing: exactly ten years ago, Dern won her first black belt world title in the same city.
The fight itself was a tactical battle that played out largely on the ground, with Dern remaining dangerous even from disadvantageous positions. “I really just try to be like dangerous on the ground and like attacking the whole time, like trying to get a submission,” she explained.
Though the bout went to the judges’ decision, Dern admitted the uncertainty that comes with not securing a finish. “I wanted to get a knockout and I wanted to be like a champion with or a submission or or a knockout so no one could say anything, you know.”
Perhaps the most touching moments came after the final bell, when Dern embraced her father and brought her young daughter into the octagon. “This belt is his just like mine,” she said of her father’s influence.
“Going through pregnancy, motherhood, you know, divorce, like normal, not normal, but things that people go through in life and also trying to be at the highest level um of a fighter possible.”
Now with the target on her back, Dern understands the challenge ahead. “They say it’s it’s hard to get the belt, but it’s even harder to stay at the top,” she acknowledged, already contemplating potential challengers like Tatiana Suarez.
