Former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has unveiled a partnership with Multibank Group to launch a blockchain-based sports initiative, despite mounting criticism over his previous cryptocurrency endorsements that left investors with significant losses.
The retired mixed martial arts icon announced an exclusive collaboration to create a global network of approximately 30 gyms tokenized through the $MBG token. In a video statement, Nurmagomedov described the venture as “connection with sport, finance and technology” that would be promoted through the Multibank ecosystem.
“Together with Chairman Mr. Nasser Tahir, we will launching something truly unique,” Nurmagomedov said. The project, which he calls a “multi-billion-dollar global venture,” aims to build what partners describe as the first regulated Sporting Real-World Assets ecosystem.
The announcement arrives amid fresh controversy surrounding Nurmagomedov’s endorsement of Arena Two, a blockchain-based sports platform that allows fans to influence live matches through token voting.
His social media post promoting the platform’s 6-a-side football tournament drew immediate backlash from followers. “Guys, let’s play in this tournament together!” Nurmagomedov posted, promoting Arena Two, which launched its social media presence in October 2024 and maintains fewer than 3,000 followers.
Critics quickly responded with accusations of hypocrisy, with one user commenting “Haram,” a reference to activities prohibited under Islamic law.
Another follower sarcastically wrote, “Guys, let’s scam again together!”
The criticism references a pattern of failed cryptocurrency promotions associated with the undefeated champion. Nurmagomedov previously endorsed the GMT token from GoMining, which promised investors the ability to mine Bitcoin through NFT ownership backed by “constantly growing computing power.”
Investors who purchased GMT token NFTs discovered they owned digital images rather than actual computing equipment, despite promotional materials suggesting tangible mining hardware. The project ultimately collapsed, leaving participants with substantial losses.
Nurmagomedov’s 2021 involvement with “Khabib Nurmagomedov NFT Gold cards” similarly disappointed investors, with the project reportedly delivering minimal or no value to those who purchased tokens.
The promotional activities have drawn particular scrutiny given Nurmagomedov’s public moral positions. The former lightweight champion previously denounced sports betting and gambling operations, stating his promotion would never accept sponsorship from such companies because they “ruin lives.” His rejection of casino and betting site partnerships was framed as consistent with his devout Muslim faith. However, his promotion of crypto projects suggest otherwise.
