Kevin Lee had to get his jaw wired shut, admits manager might’ve set him up with a bad matchup

The aftermath of Kevin Lee’s return to professional mixed martial arts has left the veteran competitor speaking through a wired jaw, but his spirit remains unbroken despite a devastating first-round defeat that has sparked controversy about the matchmaking process.

Lee, who suffered multiple knockdowns before being finished in the opening round of his PFL debut, required medical attention that resulted in his jaw being wired shut. Despite the physical toll, the former UFC contender maintained his dignity in defeat.

“My jaw might be wired shut, I may be drinking out of a straw, but at least I was able to go out there and test myself,” Lee said in a post-fight interview. “I’m no coward, I ain’t never been a coward. My body just gave out on me.”

The Detroit native acknowledged that his preparation was solid, emphasizing his ability to make weight on short notice and arrive in excellent physical condition. However, something fundamental seemed off from the opening bell.

“My legs just never got underneath me,” Lee explained. ” Kid’s a world champion for a reason. So I don’t hang my head for a second.”

The defeat has raised questions about the wisdom of the matchup selection, with observers questioning whether Lee’s management team properly considered the risks involved. Social media commentary suggested that the pairing may have been strategically disadvantageous for Lee, potentially serving to elevate his opponent’s profile rather than provide a suitable comeback opportunity.

Lee himself appeared to acknowledge these concerns when responding to criticism online, particularly regarding questions about his manager Ali Abdelaziz’s role in securing the bout. The suggestion that a more appropriate opponent could have been found for the August finale card, rather than this particular matchup, seemed to resonate with the veteran competitor.

“I know,” Lee responded when confronted with the theory that the matchmaking decision may not have been in his best interests.

The physical decline was evident throughout the brief encounter, with Lee admitting that his body’s ability to absorb punishment has diminished significantly. “My legs just aren’t what they used to be. I can’t absorb shots anymore and honestly I don’t know if it will come back,” he posted on social media.

Despite the outcome and the questions surrounding the matchmaking process, Lee maintained his pride in stepping into the cage. “I can go and tell my kids, your daddy ain’t no coward. I showed up, I put it all out there, put my heart on the line. And yeah, I’m proud of that.”

The defeat represents a harsh reality check for a martial artist who once competed at the highest levels of the sport. While Lee’s courage remains unquestioned, the manner of his loss and the circumstances surrounding the matchup have left many wondering whether his team truly had his best interests at heart when securing this particular opportunity.
