Kamaru Usman: Jon Jones is the Michael Jordan of MMA

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has ignited debate in the mixed martial arts community by comparing Jon Jones to basketball legend Michael Jordan.

During a recent appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Usman made the bold comparison when discussing Jones’ legacy in the sport.

“To be honest, Jon is in a sense the Michael Jordan that we’ve seen in MMA,” Usman stated, drawing immediate pushback from his co-hosts.

When challenged on this comparison, Usman defended his position, asking, “You’re going to tell me going through everything that he has gone through, he’s not at that level?”

The conversation became animated as one co-host suggested Jones might be closer to a combination of “Michael Jordan and LeBron James of MMA,” highlighting the difficulty in finding an appropriate comparison for Jones’ impact on the sport.

Usman acknowledged the controversy surrounding Jones but maintained his position, adding, “He’s not far from it. He’s not far from it.”

The former champion clarified that his comparison focused specifically on Jones’ athletic achievements, noting that Jones represents “a guy who has done so much,” while acknowledging that “all the other stuff” has complicated his legacy.

The debate reflects the complicated nature of Jones’ career, which has included multiple UFC championship reigns across two weight classes while also being marked by controversies outside the octagon.

Jones currently reigns as the UFC heavyweight champion after moving up from light heavyweight, where he dominated for nearly a decade, further cementing his place in MMA history despite polarizing opinions about his legacy.
