Justin Gaethje delighted to be praised by Donald Trump after UFC 291 win: ‘That was awesome’

UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje revealed that he received a personal phone call from former President of the United States Donald Trump after his remarkable win last weekend.

Gaethje is now geared up for his third shot at the UFC lightweight title, following his impressive triumph over Dustin Poirier at UFC 291. The match saw Gaethje deliver a strong head kick that left Poirier unconscious in the second round, earning him the coveted ‘BMF’ title and avenging his previous loss to Poirier in 2018.

Such a monumental victory on a headline PPV card undoubtedly attracted a flurry of congratulatory messages and phone calls. However, one call stood out among the rest.

Speaking to TMZ, Gaethje expressed his excitement about the call. He said that former US President Donald Trump had contacted him to congratulate him on his victory. Gaethje has shown his adoration for Trump and has been an outspoken admirer of the 45th president of the United States.

He said: “I got a call from Trump, that was awesome. He f**king loves fighting man. He called me and just telling me how good I did, how proud of me he was, how impressive of a show it was and if I were ever in New York or Florida I should hit him up. Hopefully we can golf.”

As for his upcoming match, Gaethje is expected to face off against the winner of the highly anticipated Charles Oliveira Vs. Islam Makhachev II bout. The match is scheduled for UFC 294 in October.

Gaethje had previously fought Oliveira in 2022 and suffered a submission loss, making him all the more eager for a chance at redemption. Gaethje stated: “I’d prefer Charles because he beat me. I’m a competitor, this chance at redemption was amazing.”

However, fans will have to wait until at least the first quarter of 2024 before witnessing Gaethje’s return to the cage.
