Judo Federation takes personal action against Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has cultivated a masculine image in the media during the time he has presided over the Russian state. Putin could be seen enjoying a variety of masculine activities including hunting, horseback riding and practicing judo.

In fact Putin has a personal soft spot for the traditional Japanese martial art. He is a black belt and can be seen in several viral clips practicing judo over the years. While UK saw it fit to ban all Russian athletes from competition in the United Kingdom – Judo federation took personal action against Putin.

Russia has a huge influence in judo – so much so, that the president of the European governing body is a Russian. In addition to this Putin was considered to be friends with the world judo governing body (IJU) Marius Vizer.

The planned Grand Slam in Kazan in May was cancelled this past Friday. In addition to this IJU has taken personal action against Vladimir Putin.

“In light of the ongoing war (conflict) in Ukraine, the International Judo Federation announces the suspension of Mr Vladimir Putin’s status as Honorary President and Ambassador of the International Judo Federation,” it said in a statement on Sunday.

This is the latest Sports body to penalize Russia over the war with Ukraine. Previously Poland and Sweden announced they would not be playing Russia in soccer during the World Cup in Qatar.

Volleyball is one of the only few sports still considering a major event in Russia with the men’s world championships scheduled for August. It’s highly unlikely it will transpire considering that more and more nations are declaring they would not be traveling to Russia to take part.
