Former lightweight contender Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal recently reached out with a heartfelt message of support to his former rival Ben Askren, who is currently facing serious health challenges.
In an emotional video shared on social media, Masvidal spoke directly to Askren: “This goes out to the one and only Ben Askren. What’s up, my brothers? I know we were rivals in the ring. I just want to say, God bless you.”
The sincerity continued as Masvidal expressed his desire to connect with Askren personally: “And when I get back in America, if I could come shake your hand, brother, and just share a prayer with you, it’ll be amazing, man.”
These words carry special weight given the history between the two competitors. Their 2019 confrontation resulted in one of the most memorable moments in UFC history. Today, Masvidal speaks with nothing but respect for Askren’s character and resilience.
“I know you’re going to pull through this because you’re a warrior, brother,” Masvidal continued in his message. “God bless. Your story is crazy inspirational, what you’re going through right now.”
The message comes at a critical time for Askren, who recently shared details about his harrowing health journey. The former Olympian and MMA star has been battling severe pneumonia that resulted in a double lung transplant and weeks on a ventilator. Askren revealed he has no recollection of parts of his ordeal, during which his heart stopped multiple times.
“I just read through my wife’s journal. It’s like a movie. It’s ridiculous,” Askren shared about his experience, adding that he lost over 50 pounds during his 45-day medical struggle.
Askren also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he’s received: “The thing that was most impeccable to me was all the love I felt. It was almost like I got to have my own funeral.”
Masvidal’s closing words to Askren capture this sentiment perfectly: “I’m hoping to get back and be able to just shake your hand, bro. I hope all is well, brother.” The message has resonated throughout the combat sports community, highlighting how even the fiercest competitors can come together in times of personal crisis.
