Jon Jones found himself at the center of attention during his recent visit to Russia, where he served as a special guest for the IBA bareknuckle boxing organization. The former UFC heavyweight champion’s presence didn’t go unnoticed by promoters, who saw an opportunity to create what could have been a blockbuster matchup.
Representing the IBA, Al Siesta can be seen on video extending an intriguing offer to Jones – the chance to face off against legendary former PRIDE FC heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko in an upcoming card scheduled for Red Square in Moscow. The proposition would have brought together two of mixed martial arts’ most respected figures.
However, Jones quickly dismissed the possibility, citing multiple factors that make such a bout unrealistic. The 38-year-old champion emphasized his contractual commitments as a primary obstacle, stating, “I’m contractually obligated to the UFC for a very long time.”
Beyond the business complications, Jones revealed a more personal reason for his reluctance.
“No one wants to see Fedor and I fight. I don’t want to fight Fedor. I absolutely love Fedor. He’s been one of my big idols for a very long time,” Jones declared. “It’s the same thing with Anderson Silva. These guys inspired me in my youth and that will never change.”
The 48-year-old Emelianenko has been generating buzz recently with speculation about a potential return to bareknuckle competition. His has a storied career, which includes a remarkable 40-7 record with one no contest.
Emelianenko came tantalizingly close to UFC superstardom on multiple occasions, including a near-miss opportunity to face Brock Lesnar at Cowboys Stadium that ultimately fell through due to personal circumstances and negotiation complications.
While Jones continues to honor his UFC obligations, he remains focused on future opportunities within the organization. The champion has his sights set on a potential UFC event at the White House, tentatively planned for summer 2026.
