Joe Rogan’s recent commentary on Robert DeNiro during his podcast with hunting personality Michael Waddell perfectly encapsulates why the UFC commentator and podcaster consistently maintains he’s neither aligned with the left nor the right politically.
When discussing Hollywood’s increasing political polarization, Rogan didn’t mince words about the legendary actor’s recent anti-Trump rhetoric. “I don’t want to hear Robert DeNiro talking about politics and about Trump supporters,” Rogan said bluntly. “Just shut the f**k up man… you didn’t think this through. This is heartbreaking… you’re 80 years old don’t ruin this thing.”
The frustration in Rogan’s voice was palpable as he continued: “I love DeNiro I love those mob movies… I don’t want to hear him… I don’t want to hear him talking about politics… Don’t ruin this thing you’ve had this life where you were f**king Raging Bull you know you in The Godfather like stop stop stop doing this.”
Rather than defending DeNiro because he might share some liberal viewpoints, or attacking him because he criticizes conservatives, Rogan simply wants the actor to stay in his lane.
Rogan’s DeNiro commentary came during a wider discussion about authenticity versus performance in American culture. He praised figures like country singer Jelly Roll and comedian Luke Bryan for being “exactly like you” in real life—authentic people whose public personas match their private selves.
During the podcast, Rogan also talked positively about his interactions with Donald Trump while also expressing frustration with political theater on both sides.
Perhaps most tellingly, Rogan’s DeNiro critique wasn’t rooted in policy disagreements but in a deeper frustration with the performative nature of modern political discourse. He doesn’t want his entertainment figures lecturing him any more than he wants his politicians pretending to be something they’re not.
