In a recent episode of his popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, UFC commentator and comedian Joe Rogan didn’t pull any punches when discussing arm wrestling. Known for his candid opinions, Rogan surprised listeners by calling out the activity as “the most absurd display of machismo.”
Rogan, who regularly watches and comments on intense mixed martial arts bouts, drew a line at arm wrestling, citing safety concerns. “It’s the dumbest macho thing that we do, when guys go, ‘wanna arm wrestle bro?'” he remarked during the show.
The podcaster’s criticism stems from the potential for injury in arm wrestling, especially when participants lack proper technique or protective equipment. He compared it to dangerous submission moves in wrestling and jiu-jitsu, where limbs can be at risk.
Interestingly, Rogan’s guest on the episode, fellow comedian Tom Segura, recalled a past arm wrestling encounter with the host. Segura noted Rogan’s surprising strength, inadvertently highlighting the physical disparity that can lead to injuries in casual arm wrestling matches.
While Rogan’s stance might ruffle some feathers, it’s not the first time he’s stirred controversy with his opinions. Recently, he made waves by praising YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul ahead of Paul’s upcoming match with Mike Tyson. Rogan defended Paul’s legitimacy as a boxer and highlighted the new audience he’s bringing to the sport.
However, Rogan expressed concern about the age difference between Paul and Tyson, hoping the 58-year-old boxing legend wouldn’t suffer a knockout loss to the younger challenger. Despite these reservations, Rogan acknowledged Tyson’s enduring power, noting that even at his age, the former champion remains a formidable opponent.
As a martial arts enthusiast and UFC commentator, Rogan’s perspective on physical contests carries weight. His criticism of arm wrestling as an “absurd display of machismo” may prompt fans and casual participants alike to reconsider the activity’s risks and merits.
