Renowned UFC commentator and comedian Joe Rogan recently released his highly-anticipated Netflix special “Burn the Boats” after a six-year hiatus from stand-up comedy. However, the special has produced a viral clip, with many questioning if Rogan was reproducing a joke from his friend and fellow comedian Brendan Schaub’s Netflix show “Gringo Papi”.
A Reddit user created a side-by-side video comparison of the two comedians’ jokes, drawing attention to the striking similarities between Rogan’s line “I wish I was gay; it looks way easier. You’re hanging out with only guys, no one can get pregnant…” and Schaub’s similar joke from “Gringo Papi”, “My life would be so much easier if I was just gay as sh*t. If I was locked down with the bros during quarantine with the homies, you know how much fun we would have?”
This is especially funny because one of the landmark moments from Rogan’s career involved calling out Carlos Mencia for stealing jokes from then lesser known comics.
However, some fans have come to Rogan’s defense, arguing that the joke is not original to Schaub and has been told by many comedians before. One fan commented, “Yeah man, plenty of comedians find similar things funny, especially dudes who share values.” Another fan added, “Dude… that joke is old AF. It’s been told by many different comedians/ordinary dudes.”
And considering the fact Rogan’s special was live, who can blame him for using a common premise.
The special itself is definitely passable if you’re already a part of the demo that consumes Joe Rogan podcast on the regular.
Rogan and Schaub have a long-standing friendship, frequently appearing together on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. While Rogan has not yet responded to the similarity, it’s certainly creating a funny moment considering how many comedians hate the Gringo Papi.
Brendan Schaub’s comedy special “Gringo Papi” has received overwhelming criticism, being described as a significant decline from even his previous work, “You’d Be Surprised.” There’s a lack of coherence and structure, marked by jarring transitions and a disjointed narrative. The material is criticized as generic and unfunny, with Schaub struggling to deliver even basic jokes.
