Jiri Prochazka cuts weight with ‘the power of his mind’

UFC light heavyweight contender Jiri Prochazka has revealed an unconventional approach to making weight that sounds more like science fiction than sports science. In a recent episode of the Mighty Cast, the Czech MMA star explained that he cuts from 220 pounds to 205 pounds using little more than mental focus and body awareness.

“I’m not keeping any diet before the weigh-in and my body naturally from 100 kilos to the 93,”

Prochazka explained to host Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. When pressed on whether he could simply think his way to the required weight, Prochazka confirmed:

“That’s it.”

The former UFC light heavyweight champion described his process as intuitive rather than systematic.

“I just know when is the weigh-in and then my weight is going down, down, down,”

he said. By the day before weigh-ins, Prochazka naturally sits between 205-209 pounds, requiring minimal intervention to hit the 205-pound championship limit.

Unlike most MMA stars who employ strict dietary protocols, water loading, and extended sauna sessions, Prochazka maintains he doesn’t alter his eating habits significantly.

“I’m just eating healthy… no bullshits, rice, veggies, good meat, and fishes too,”

he noted. If he needs to shed a few final grams, he’ll take a hot bath the morning of weigh-ins, but that’s the extent of his cutting protocol.

This mind-body connection extends throughout Prochazka’s entire training philosophy. The 32-year-old MMA star has built a reputation for extreme training methods that blur the line between physical conditioning and spiritual practice. He’s completed 1,000 burpees in a single session without breaks, spent 24 hours doing continuous shadowboxing combinations, and isolated himself in dark rooms for days at a time to sharpen his mental focus.

“Sometimes when you are a young man, you have to do that to be more alive, more sensitive, more focused,”

Prochazka explained regarding his extreme training choices. These practices aren’t merely physical challenges but attempts to explore the limits of human consciousness and performance.

Prochazka’s approach to weight cutting represents his broader philosophy of living in tune with his body’s natural rhythms. Rather than forcing his physiology to comply through extreme measures, he cultivates awareness that allows his body to respond to his intentions.

“I feel my body,”

he said simply.

“In the next week I have to weigh-in. I need to be a little bit down. And I don’t know how, but I’m going with the weight down, down, but day by day.”

This method stands in stark contrast to the horror stories that emerge from MMA weight cuts, where MMA stars endure dehydration, extreme caloric restriction, and dangerous sauna sessions that can compromise performance and health. Prochazka’s natural approach may explain why he consistently performs at a high level, most recently defeating Khalil Rountree Jr. via third-round knockout to position himself for another title shot.

Whether other MMA stars can replicate Prochazka’s mental weight-cutting technique remains doubtful. His approach appears rooted in years of meditation, breathwork, and body awareness practices that have made him exceptionally attuned to his physical state. For Prochazka, cutting weight isn’t a battle against his body but a collaboration with it—a philosophy that extends to every aspect of his unique competing career.
