Islam Makhachev came to Moscow to watch, not to wrestle, but by the end of the night he found himself fielding a challenge from one of the sport’s most decorated names.
The UFC welterweight and lightweight champion sat ringside for RAF Wrestling’s Moscow event, taking in a card that featured American wrestling great Jordan Burroughs. He delivered a statement performance, handing a technical fall defeat to Magomed Kurbanaliev in front of a home crowd that had shown up to support the Russian.
Burroughs was not shy about what he wanted next. Moments after his hand was raised, he used his post-match interview with Chael Sonnen to send a direct message to the champion watching from ringside.
“Islam, where are you?” Burroughs said. “I came to your country, to your capital city and tech falled one of your world champions. I’ll be back to Russia very soon and the only person I want to share the stage with is Islam.”
The call for a takedown battle with the reigning UFC titleholder was blunt and unmistakable. Burroughs wanted to know if Makhachev, widely regarded as the finest wrestler competing in mixed martial arts today, would test himself against a true legend of the sport on the mat.
Makhachev answered, but not on the terms Burroughs proposed. Taking to X, he praised the win while steering the conversation toward his own arena.
“Congrats on your win legend,” Makhachev wrote. “In the cage, anywhere anytime.”
It was a pointed swap of one contest for another. Rather than accept a grappling match against a two-time Olympic medalist with a resume most wrestlers could only dream of, Makhachev flipped the invitation toward the cage, the environment where he has built his own legacy across two weight classes.
Burroughs, however, has no such background to draw on. Despite being pursued for crossover bouts for years, he has never competed in mixed martial arts.
For Makhachev, the exchange comes on the heels of a defense of his 170 lb (77 kg) title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. With that win behind him, attention now turns to who steps up next, with Michael Morales and Carlos Prates both in the mix to potentially earn a sh0t at the champion.
