Daisuke Hori built his reputation on a claim that sounds almost impossible: for 17 years, he says, he has gotten by on just 30 minutes of sleep a night. The self-described “short sleeper” even runs a school where he teaches his methods to paying students. So when he decided to prove it to the world by broadcasting an entire week of his life on YouTube, it seemed like the ultimate test of his own legend.
Instead, it turned into a case study in how quickly an audience can turn on a claim once the cameras catch something that doesn’t add up.
The broadcast ran from September 9 to September 16, and according to local outlets, it was rocky almost from the start. Viewers began noticing gaps, silences, and moments where Hori simply wasn’t where he was supposed to be.
One of the more talked about incidents came on September 13, when Hori was reportedly getting a massage that lasted about an hour. During that stretch, his face wasn’t visible on camera and the audio cut out, which was more than enough for viewers to start speculating that he had drifted off. Later that same day, he vanished from the frame again for an extended period, only reappearing once an alarm sounded, a detail that did little to quiet the doubters.
Adding fuel to the fire, Hori told his audience partway through the week that he would begin taking naps on camera, a move that sat awkwardly next to his long standing 30 minute claim. He explained the shift by saying he had “designed an overly ambitious sleep schedule,” which was his way of acknowledging that the naps had become necessary. He also pointed to his lack of rest as the reason behind an embarrassing moment during a bath segment of the broadcast, when he accidentally exposed himself to viewers.
One clip circulating alongside the coverage carried a caption noting that Hori had woken up in 30 minutes on the fourth day of the challenge, “but it was clear his condition was reaching its limit.”
Hori has faced pushback over his sleep claims before, but this broadcast was meant to be the moment he silenced detractors for good by simply living his ordinary routine in front of an audience.
Instead, the missing footage, the alarm triggered reappearances, and the admission that naps were now part of the plan gave skeptics fresh material rather than the vindication he was likely hoping for.
