Ilia Topuria got a promenade named after him in Toledo, Spain

UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria received one of Spain’s highest civic honors as the city of Toledo unveiled “Paseo Ilia Topuria,” a promenade named in his honor.

The undefeated star, who has recently embraced the nickname “The Legend,” was visibly moved during the dedication ceremony organized by the Toledo City Council. Topuria, sporting a perfect 16-0 professional record, delivered a heartfelt speech expressing his gratitude for this recognition in his adopted homeland.

“This is another dream fulfilled,” Topuria told the gathered crowd, who responded with chants of “Milio! Milio!” – his affectionate nickname among Spanish fans.

The Spanish-Georgian champion, who has become one of Spain’s most celebrated athletes, took time during the event to address questions about potential upcoming opponents, including former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.

When asked if he would take a walk with the Brazilian on his newly dedicated promenade, Topuria didn’t hold back: “Would I go for a walk with Charles Oliveira? The truth is that yes, to give him a little culture and some teaching, since it seems that he has not read even the page of a newspaper that kid.”

This comment continues the growing tension between the two, which has intensified since Topuria announced his intention to move up to the lightweight division. Oliveira recently claimed he could knock out the Spanish-Georgian champion, escalating what had previously been a respectful relationship.

Topuria’s decision to vacate his featherweight belt to pursue lightweight glory has reshuffled the UFC’s competitive landscape. Industry insiders suggest a bout between Topuria and Oliveira could materialize in early 2025, particularly since lightweight champion Islam Makhachev’s team has expressed interest in defending against Justin Gaethje next.

The newly minted promenade in Toledo represents another milestone in Topuria’s remarkable journey. As he eyes a return to the octagon this summer, “The Legend” continues to cement his legacy both inside and outside the cage, with his name now permanently enshrined in the historic Spanish city.

For fans eagerly awaiting news of his next opponent, Topuria indicated announcements should be coming soon as he prepares to begin his training camp for what promises to be another electrifying performance.
