In a funny interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Ian Machado Garry revealed an unusual source of daily motivation that drives his professional development.
The welterweight contender disclosed that he keeps a framed photograph in his bedroom depicting a moment from his contest with Shavkat Rakhmonov, specifically showing Garry on Rakhmonov’s back during the first round.
“I framed in my bedroom me on Shavkat’s back in the first round so that every day I get up out of bed I see that thing and it burns my soul,” Garry explained.
When asked why he would choose to preserve such a memory, Garry elaborated on his psychological approach to improvement.
“So that every day I get up, I make sure that I go out and I get better and I evolve and I become the best version of me I possibly can,” he said.
The Irish competitor views the photograph as a daily reminder of his ambitions and a tool to prove himself to various audiences.
“[It’s] to show myself and everyone that supports me and wants to see me do well and everyone that hates me and wants to see me lose that I’m the best in the world,” Garry stated.
This unconventional motivational technique offers fans insight into the mental fortitude that drives Garry’s training regimen and competitive mindset as he continues his career progression.
