During a conversation on The Tim Ferriss Show, neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman revealed that he has personally used BPC-157, a peptide comp0und currently backed by no published human clinical trials, and keeps a supply of it on hand for injuries.
BPC-157 is a chain of amino acids naturally found in gastric juice.
Huberman described the animal research as genuinely compelling: “The animal data on BPC are really impressive. Cartilage regrowth, fibroblast migration, angiogenesis, nerve regrowth. It’s a literature I’ve spent a lot of time with. There’s not a single published human trial.”
That absence of human data has not stopped Huberman from using it himself. “I’ve tried it,” he said. “I definitely feel like after a pain or strain, the recovery is faster, but I can’t do the control experiment because it goes systemic.”
The systemic nature of the comp0und means localized injection does not keep it confined to one area, which makes it nearly impossible to test against a proper control in a self-experiment. He told Ferriss he keeps BPC-157 in his refrigerator and reaches for it selectively when dealing with a strain, not as a daily or ongoing recovery tool.
Huberman was pointed in his view that routine use does not make much sense. “Why would you take it ongoing? That just doesn’t make any sense to me, frankly,” he said.
His recommendation for anyone considering it was to obtain it through a compounding pharmacy with a doctor’s prescription rather than sourcing it from gray market suppliers, which he said carry contamination risks.
He also flagged a notable concern: “BPC-157 has this asterisk next to it. It will cause angiogenesis. So people are saying you don’t want to vascularize a tumor.”
The worry is that increased blood vessel formation could inadvertently supply nutrients to undetected cancerous tissue. He was quick to note, however, that the compound is “not mutagenic. So it’s not carcinogenic mutagenic per se.”
Ferriss chimed in with his own experience, having used the so-called Wolverine stack, a combination of BPC-157 and TB-500, following elbow surgery. His takeaway was honest: “Did it help? I have no idea, frankly.”
Huberman ultimately framed BPC-157 as a comp0und with real potential that remains frustratingly under-studied.
“BBC can have its potential role in healing for some people, but there are no trials,” he said, adding that he sees little likelihood of proper clinical trials being conducted anytime soon, given the cost and the lack of financial incentive for anyone to fund them.
His position was measured: try it for a specific injury if you can source it cleanly, but do not expect the kind of dramatic results that come from more established comp0unds, and do not take it without a reason to do so.
