According to producer Bey Logan, Maggie Q’s rise to Hollywood stardom wasn’t the result of typical industry networking or traditional auditions. In a recent video, he says it was her authentic martial arts skills and fearless attitude that caught the attention of a Mission Impossible casting director during a moment on the set of Dragon Squad in 2005.
Logan recalls the scene that changed everything: a cemetery sequence where Maggie’s character was supposed to swing down from a tree on a cable while firing a gun. Initially, the action choreographer planned to use a stunt double for the dangerous sequence, employing what he called a “Texas switch”—having the stuntwoman swing down out of frame while Maggie would run into the shot afterwards.
But Maggie Q had other ideas. “Maggie being Maggie says, ‘Okay, you know what? If that’s your plan, the stuntwoman can come out of the tree on the cable, land on the ground, and she can run into shot firing,'” Logan recounted. When told they’d be able to tell it wasn’t her, she replied, “Exactly. So either you put me up that tree or we can forget about it.”
The young actress’s determination impressed everyone on set. “So Maggie gets up the tree, does the whole freaking thing in one shot, swings down on the cable. She’s a fantastic athlete. Swings down, runs in the shot firing, and it’s this great shot in the movie, and it’s her the whole time,” Logan explained.
Unbeknownst to anyone, a casting director for Mission Impossible 3 was visiting the set that day through a mutual connection with another producer. Watching from behind the monitors, the casting director was immediately struck by what he witnessed.
“Who is that girl? My goodness, the way she swung down from the tree and she’s incredible,” he asked Logan. When Logan explained she was an actress in the film, the man revealed his identity: “Oh, I’m casting the next Mission Impossible film for Tom Cruise and we’re looking for somebody to be Asian action girl.”
Logan contrasts this with another actress who, around the same time, refused to jump from a garage roof onto grass because her mother advised against it, effectively ending her career prospects. “Maggie was like, you know, I’m going to go for it. You know, she’s got that energy. And so that’s why that happened the way it did,” he noted.
Sometimes, the best breaks come from simply being willing to do the work yourself.
