Heavyweight World Kickboxing Champion Says Bruce Lee Was Punching As Hard As A Heavyweight

Former heavyweight world kickboxing champion Joe Lewis has broken decades of silence to share details about his legendary encounter with Bruce Lee. According to Lewis, the martial arts icon possessed punching power that defied his modest 138-pound frame.

“For a guy who only weighed 138 pounds and he weighed less than that when he passed away. He hit extremely hard. He could hit as hard as a heavyweight,”

Lewis revealed in a recently resurfaced interview. The champion’s testimony provides rare firsthand insight into Bruce Lee‘s true capabilities, dispelling any doubts about the legendary MMA star’s power.

Lewis speaks with the authority of someone who experienced Lee‘s strikes personally.

“I know this because he stood in front of me and he popped me a few times. So, I’ve always told people I know how hard Bruce Lee could hit. I know how fast he was cuz he nailed me,”

he explained, adding that the experience taught him

“what real Jundo was because I got popped with it a few times.”

The encounter between these two martial arts titans occurred at the 1967 Long Beach International Karate Championships, where Lewis, already a dominant force in full contact karate, witnessed something that would forever change his perspective on competition. What began as what some believed would be a routine training session became a humbling experience for the heavyweight champion.

Lewis described Bruce Lee‘s speed as otherworldly:

“I always thought he was like the fastest guy who ever stood in front of me.”

The champion found himself completely outmatched by Lee‘s lightning-fast combinations and precise striking.

“For a while, I was able to get that punch in on Bruce Lee, but then he would go into that little Zen alpha state, and I couldn’t get anything in.”

The most overwhelming aspect of their encounter wasn’t just Lee‘s speed or precision—it was the devastating power behind his strikes. Despite weighing significantly less than Lewis, Bruce Lee‘s punches carried the impact of a much larger MMA star. This revelation challenges conventional wisdom about size and power in martial arts, demonstrating that technique, speed and biomechanical efficiency could generate force that rivals or exceeds that of heavyweight competitors.

Lewis, known for his own devastating power and having faced some of the world’s toughest opponents, admitted that Lee‘s striking ability left him stunned. The experience was so overwhelming that Lewis later reflected,

“He nearly k—-d me,”

describing moments when Lee‘s rapid-fire strikes left him gasping for air and momentarily unable to breathe.

What makes Lewis‘s testimony particularly compelling is his reputation as an objective and respected voice in martial arts. Having defeated numerous world-class opponents throughout his career, his acknowledgment of Bruce Lee‘s superior abilities carries significant weight within the martial arts community.
