The Las Vegas crowd barely had time to settle when Conor McGregor’s long-awaited UFC return came to a sudden, painful halt. Just 69 seconds into the main event of UFC 329, the Dubliner was on his knees, his right leg having buckled before the first real exchange could take shape.
It happened in the opening moments. McGregor threw a kick with his left leg, but it was his right knee that gave way in the process. The official stoppage came at one minute and nine seconds, leaving one of the sport’s most recognizable names on his knees in the aftermath.
UFC President Dana White addressed reporters after the bout, making little effort to hide his expectations for the evening.
“I was expecting at least a one round war,” he said during the press conference. “We’re assuming blown ACL. The doctors think the same thing too.”
White also pushed back when asked whether McGregor had entered the arena already compromised, stating he did not believe a pre-existing injury was a factor.
The night had been five years in the making. McGregor’s previous outing ended when he sustained a leg fracture against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, keeping him out of competition for the entirety of that stretch.
When the matchup with Holloway was announced, the anticipation was considerable. McGregor had taken a victory over Holloway once before, in a featherweight meeting in Boston some 13 years ago, and he spoke boldly about securing another.
The bout ended before any of that could be tested. It never developed into anything resembling a genuine contest.
Holloway, clearly unsatisfied with how the evening concluded, wasted no time in calling for a rematch, signaling he views the matter as unresolved.
For McGregor, the situation is considerably more complicated. At 36, with an ACL apparently torn on top of a medical history that already includes a serious leg fracture, genuine questions now surround whether he will compete again at the highest level.
The UFC’s medical staff is expected to fully assess the damage in the coming days, and the early indicators are not encouraging.
