In a candid interview with Home of Fight, UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns opened up about the unexpected consequences of his heightened profile following his memorable bout with Khamzat Chimaev.
The Brazilian fighter revealed that the surge in popularity significantly changed his priorities and perspective, sometimes steering him away from his original goals in the sport.
“I think it got way too big after that Chimaev fight,” Burns admitted. “I think it got a lot of fans, it got a lot of recognition, which is not a bad thing.”
The recognition brought tangible benefits to Burns’ career outside the octagon. “It was good, a lot of opportunities, a couple sponsors, you know, the fans recognizing [me] everywhere,” he explained. “It built up my platform to a different level.”
However, Burns acknowledged that these newfound rewards began to subtly shift his focus away from his championship aspirations.
“You kind of get caught up with these a little bit, like making money, traveling, getting recognition,” he reflected. “That kind of took me a little bit away, slowly away of my path, that Durinho that trains really hard, that wants to become a champion.”
Burns clarified that financial growth wasn’t inherently negative, but it did impact his dedication to his craft. The setbacks he experienced subsequently served as a wake-up call, prompting him to reevaluate his priorities.
“After those couple losses, [it] was kind of actually very good for me to reflect on that, see what I changed and kind of start correcting that a little bit,” Burns shared.
This period of introspection led to significant personal development for Burns, who emphasized that he’s been strengthening his spiritual foundation. “Putting my priorities first, getting my relationship with God kind of to a place that I never been there,” he said.
