WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has criticized Jake Paul over his claims about his bout with Mike Tyson, suggesting that the YouTuber-turned-boxer wasn’t being truthful about his intentions in the ring.
During a recent appearance on the “A Safe Place” podcast, Davis shared his candid thoughts about Paul’s performance against the 58-year-old boxing legend, which ended in a unanimous decision victory for Paul after eight rounds.
“I don’t think he should have fought Mike Tyson. Only because of who Mike Tyson is and the age. Like you know what, it’s certain stuff you don’t do,” Davis said. “And he said that he didn’t try to knock him out. Yes you did, you just couldn’t get the knockout.”
The bout, which garnered significant attention within the boxing community, faced criticism due to the 30-year age gap between the competitors. Many observers noted that Tyson appeared to fatigue after the initial rounds.
While Davis acknowledged Paul’s dedication to the sport, saying “he do be in the gym” and “he’s working on stuff,” he expressed concern about the matchup itself. “People that’s around Mike Tyson shouldn’t let him fight that fight,” Davis added, citing concerns about Tyson’s age and longevity in the sport.
The comments come as Davis prepares for his own upcoming bout against Lamont Roach, scheduled for March 1. Recently, Davis has been reconsidering his previous statements about retiring in 2025, indicating he might take a break instead of fully retiring.
“I want to get myself together. Not retire but take a break… I ain’t gonna lie, I already made a promise to Al [Haymon] we out of it,” Davis revealed, suggesting that his future in professional boxing might extend beyond his initially planned retirement date.
