Georges St-Pierre: Chimaev “disrespected the sport” with UFC 279 weight miss

Khamzat Chimaev appears to have gotten on everyone’s nerves with his unprofessional behavior in lead up to UFC 279.

Not only is his weight miss the biggest conspiracy floating around but it’s also causing condemnation from some of the most beloved personalities in MMA.

After Khabib, Welterweight GOAT Georges St-Pierre was the latest to criticize Chimaev.

Khamzat Chimaev missed weight by a whopping 7.5 pounds.

Chimaev was relegated to a co-main event against Kevin Holland as a result of the significant weight miss.

The UFC said that doctors suggested Chimaev to stop cutting weight due to health issues. But Chimaev’s own coach refuted this account and said it was him that nixed the weight cut.

Fans were irked with Chimaev’s unapologetic behavior.

Some fans think the UFC played a big part in the seemingly chaotic situation at UFC 279, including Chimaev’s failure to miss weight. However, UFC veteran Georges St-Pierre is heavily disappointed in Khamzat Chimaev.

The former UFC two-division champion recently had a quick interview with The Schmo in which he elaborated:

“He needs to make weight. When you miss weight it’s a big disrespect not only to your opponent but to the sport. We don’t know what happened. Maybe there’s a medical reason or something, so when you don’t know, you don’t know. But in the future if he misses weight another time, maybe that will prevent him from having a title shot.” St-Pierre said.

Georges St-Pierre is not playing around, Back when Oliveira missed weight by 0.5 pounds, St-Pierre said that Oliveira deserved the punishment: getting his belt stripped.

Of course GSP is also not infalible. When discussing how Oliveira was treated, Ariel Helwani outlined that St-Pierre too had a suspect weigh in situation against Nick Diaz.

A video had surfaced of former UFC VP Michael Mersch informing Diaz’s camp that Quebec rules would allow both GSP and Diaz to weigh-in anywhere between 170.1-170.9 and have that number rounded down to 170.

“He missed f—ing weight. He f—ing missed weight. He didn’t make weight. How is that not news?” Diaz said alleging GSP had missed weight by 3 pounds.

While Khabib questioned Chimaev’s choice to give the finger to the media at weigh ins others questioned his IQ and his future at welterweight.

St-Pierre added,

“Maybe give him [Chimaev] the chance to go back at 170lb if he wants to, but he can’t miss weight. Missing weight, it’s hard to forgive. As a fan, I would like to see Kamaru Usman get revenge [for the next title fight] because if anyone deserves it, it’s him. Maybe perhaps Chimaev has a shot against the winner of this fight [with Leon Edwards].”
