Former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort has given fans quite the surprise with his latest social media update. The 48-year-old Brazilian MMA star recently underwent a hair transplant procedure and shared the results with his followers on Instagram.
In a video posted earlier this week, Belfort appeared with swollen eyes, barely able to open them as he addressed his audience with his trademark humor intact. The MMA legend joked about his post-surgery appearance, drawing a comparison to one of cinema’s most famous bruised faces.
“What’s up, guys? I know you must be thinking that Vitor is back in the UFC, right? But hold on. The opponent this time was another one. It was a hair implant,”
Belfort explained in the clip.
“The doctor only said that my hair was going to look great. New hair, new look, but he forgot to tell me that I was going to look like Rocky Balboa after the rematch.”
The procedure involved 1,400 grafts, according to Belfort’s Instagram caption, where he wrote:
“I went back to the Octagon… but this time, my opponent was a hair transplant. Result: 1,400 grafts vs. 2 swollen eyes. Victory by divine restoration!”
Medical experts note that the swelling Belfort experienced is actually a common side effect following hair transplant surgery. The temporary condition results from inflammation and fluid buildup in the area and typically resolves itself within several days.
The timing of Belfort’s cosmetic procedure comes after a challenging few months for ‘The Phenom.’ He was forced to withdraw from a highly anticipated rematch with longtime rival Wanderlei Silva at Spaten FN 2 in September after sustaining a concussion during training. This marked the second time such a match between the two legends had fallen through, with a previous attempt at UFC 147 in 2012 also failing to materialize.
Despite the temporary setback from his medical procedure, Belfort appears to be in good spirits and recovering well.
