Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been spotted at a car show, but not at the kind of venue fans might expect. Photos recently emerged showing Velasquez attending a lowrider showcase held within the confines of Soledad State Prison in California, where he is currently serving time.
On May 19th, the prison yard was transformed into an automobile enthusiast’s dream, featuring vintage cars, gleaming chrome finishes, and a standout 1965 Buick Wildcat that captured everyone’s attention. Velasquez appeared relaxed as he engaged with fellow inmates and staff, surrounded by muscle cars and revving engines.
This appearance isn’t entirely surprising given Velasquez’s known interest in automobiles. Before his incarceration, he competed in the Mint 400 off-road event and was known to test high-performance vehicles. What makes this sighting noteworthy is how it represents a fusion of his past freedoms with his current circumstances.
The car show wasn’t organized specifically for Velasquez but was part of a broader rehabilitation initiative coordinated by local car clubs and correctional facility staff.
Velasquez’s presence at the prison is the result of a 2022 incident where he pursued a man accused of assaulting his young son. While missing his intended target, he wounded the man’s stepfather. This led to his imprisonment after he pleaded no contest to the charges.
UFC CEO Dana White reportedly made efforts to intervene in Velasquez’s legal proceedings. According to longtime UFC referee Big John McCarthy, White sent letters to the judge and advocated on Velasquez’s behalf behind the scenes, showing a personal loyalty to the fighter that transcended business interests. Later, White paid for Velasquez’ $1M bond.
Despite these efforts, Velasquez received a five-year sentence. However, with time already served and California’s sentencing guidelines, he could potentially be released as early as March 2026.
