Floyd Mayweather Books December Exhibition Boxing Match Under Rizin FF Banner

Boxing star Floyd Mayweather Jr. reportedly is set to have another exhibition boxing match. The former world champion will exchange blows at a Rizin FF event in Japan.

It’s been five years since Floyd Mayweather retired from professional boxing. The 45-year-old American had his last match against MMA star Conor McGregor in August 2017, where he finished the Irish man in the tenth round.

However, ‘Money’ is far from retirement when it comes to exhibition bouts. Mayweather still has his touch and a huge fanbase to help him find success via PPV buys. In 2018, he did his first exhibition bout and boxed Japanese mixed martial artist Tenshin Nasukawa. Mayweather easily knocked him out in the first round.

He continued to box in exhibition bouts following up that performance against Youtube star Logan Paul last year. The pair clashed for a full 8 rounds but there was no official scoring so in the end of it it was a draw.

His most recent bout was in May where he boxed longtime sparring partner Don Moore in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The match lasted for 8 rounds and Mayweather completely outclassed Moore during each round. He even spoke to the cameras and the referee in between punishing assaults on Moore and asked to extend the rounds in the middle of the match.

Recently, an official press release revealed Mayweather already agreed upon the next return to the squared circle. Mayweather is slated to box within Japanese MMA promotion Rizin Fighting Federation. According to some reports in Japan, the event will be held in December of this year.

“I’m very happy to be sitting in between these two athletes for this event which will be Floyd Mayweather’s second with RIZIN,” Nobuyuki Sakakibara, CEO of Rizin, stated during the announcement presser at M Resort Spa & Casino in Las Vegas. “Floyd Mayweather was supposed to fight in an exhibition in Japan earlier in the year with an organization called Mega. However, due to the pandemic it has been postponed and RIZIN has taken over the contract for Floyd Mayweather’s next fight in Japan.”

“I got to where I got to by working extremely hard,” Mayweather noted. “I’m always focused. I’m always pushing to be the best. It’s still a great feeling to travel the world, do these exhibition fights and entertain people from all walks of life. I’ve seen every style. My job is just to go out there, have fun and be my best.”

“I’m an MMA fighter but I’m going to use this opportunity and I’m going to use him to raise my name and my value internationally,” noted Asakura. “I will win this fight.”

Mayweather  is booked to box mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura. Asakura is 29 years old and claims his style as Karate and Boxing. He’s competed since 2012 and has competed for a number of prominent Asian promotions including Road FC and DEEP.

He is the older brother of viral sensation Kai Asakura. His professional record consists of 16 wins 3 losses and 1 no contest. He last fought at Riin 33 New Years show in 2021. His last knock out was in December of 2020 via head kick and punch.

This news contradicts what Mayweather said following his match against Don Moore. After the match ended, he teased his next exhibition bout and said he will box in the UAE again. There was even talk of him facing retiring boxer Amir Khan.
