Mixed martial arts legend Fedor Emelianenko revealed details about his difficult childhood and explained that he dealt with serious health issues including asthma and chronic bronchitis while also struggling with his weight.
During an interview at a training camp in Kislovodsk, the Russian heavyweight icon described the medical obstacles that could have derailed his athletic path before it started.
“I was suffocating, I had some asthmatic attacks.”
“Well, I was constantly suffering from bronchitis. Well, and such asthma.”
These complications affected his ability to train as a young athlete. When his coach Vladimir Mikhailovich assigned demanding exercises, Emelianenko explained that he “could have intercepted the pit so much that, well, I would have started to choke.”
He also dealt with high blood pressure and weight problems during his youth.
“I wasn’t small, I was plump and fat.”
Doctors monitored him closely because the combination of being overweight and having elevated blood pressure at such a young age was concerning.
“I was under supervision for a long time afterwards, I went to the doctors, had my blood pressure measured.”
He noted that at only eleven years old he had readings of 120/80 and above which are typically associated with adults. Medical professionals even temporarily restricted him from exercising because of these concerns which created more hurdles for someone who would later become one of the sport’s most decorated MMA stars.
However, Emelianenko credits persistence and cardiovascular work for overcoming these problems.
“I just ran and crossed it all and it all went away, thank God.”
“My weight went away, my blood pressure went away.”
The transformation from an unhealthy child with breathing issues into one of combat sports’ most respected competitors highlights Emelianenko‘s remarkable determination. His journey shows that physical challenges in youth do not define someone’s potential and dedication along with proper training can help overcome even serious obstacles.
