UFC sensation Vanessa Demopoulos is known for her resilience and dynamic personality. She utilised her MMA skills to handle unruly patrons during her stint as a stripper. As she prepares for a strawweight bout against Emily Ducote at UFC Vegas 92, Demopoulos’s journey from the pole to the octagon has captivated many.
Demopoulos has secured victories in four of her last five matches, showcasing her talent and determination. Her recent successes have not only boosted her career but also expanded her fan base, thanks in part to her infectious enthusiasm and memorable post-fight celebrations.
Known for her viral moments, she often leaps into the arms of UFC commentators Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, and Michael Bisping after her matches.
The path to UFC stardom has been anything but easy for the 35-year-old. Vanessa Demopoulos only left her stripping career in 2022 to fully commit to her MMA aspirations.
Reflecting on her journey, she talked about it recently. She told Talksport: “I’ve always been a tough cookie. I used to fight a lot when I was in school and I actually got kicked out of a lot of schools for fighting when I was young.”
Her transition from dancing to MMA began at 18 when someone at the club suggested she channel her pole dancing skills into martial arts. At 21, Demopoulos took up the challenge. She hasn’t looked back since, embracing the rigorous training and competitive nature of MMA.
“When I turned 18, I started dancing as a stripper, as a pole dancer, and then someone saw me in the club and said, ‘If you put that same skill that you put towards pole dancing into fighting, you might do something with it.’”
“So, I was like, ‘Cool. Teach me how to fight.’ That was when I was 21 years old, and I never looked back. I loved it!”
Balancing dual careers in stripping and MMA was challenging, but Demopoulos’s fighting skills proved beneficial in unexpected ways.
Recalling her experiences, she mentioned: “I’ve had to choke a couple of guys unconscious at work, you know. They would try to run off on me without paying me or something and didn’t know they were messing with the wrong chick. They’d end up waking up and politely giving me my money.”
“That was really cool. So, I doubled up as a bouncer at work. The bouncers said they didn’t have to worry about me because I was gonna handle my business.”
Leaving a lucrative career behind to focus on MMA was a significant risk for Demopoulos. However, her dedication is paying off as she aims to climb the ranks in the 115lb division, currently dominated by Weili Zhang.
Despite financial insecurities at the time, she believed in her abilities and decided to devote herself entirely to her sport.
She stated: “This is my dream and I get to chase them now. I didn’t have the financial means at the time when I walked away and I was really scared, honestly. I believed in myself, and I trusted my skillset. I trusted myself and I knew that I was going to be able to make something of this. I didn’t want to split my effort anymore.”
“One day I will be the champion and I’m working towards that. I know that in my heart, in my soul. I work for that every single day. This is all I think about.”
