Two icons of strength sport recently stepped into unfamiliar territory, trading their usual strongman implements for the ancient art of sumo wrestling. Former World’s Strongest Man champion Eddie Hall welcomed his close friend and four-time World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw to Derby for an entertaining clash that would test their skills in an entirely new discipline.
The massive encounter was captured in a recent YouTube video. It brought together 760 pounds of combined muscle and power, with Shaw weighing in at over 420 pounds while Hall, despite trimming down for his recent combat sports ventures, still carried 334 pounds into the ring. The pair’s friendship has endured through years of strongman competition, making this latest challenge a natural extension of their sporting rivalry.
Before facing each other, both athletes received expert instruction from Steve Pateman of the British Sumo Federation at a local gym. The training session allowed them to grasp the fundamentals of sumo technique, learning proper stance, grip, and movement patterns essential to the sport. Each competitor then tested their newly acquired skills against experienced practitioners from the gym, providing valuable preparation for the main event.
When Hall and Shaw finally squared off, the match became an intense battle of wills and technique. The standoff lasted approximately ninety seconds, with neither strongman able to gain a decisive advantage initially.
The climax came as Shaw found himself backed against the boundary line. Sensing the opportunity, Hall executed an explosive hip toss that sent both competitors tumbling from the ring almost simultaneously. The close finish required a decision from the assembled gym members, who served as impromptu judges for the exhibition match.
“Everyone’s a judge, jury and executioner in this room,” Hall quipped after the gym overwhelmingly declared him the victor. Shaw playfully commented on his opponent’s perspiration following their intense grappling exchange.
Since his knockout victory over Polish strongman legend Mariusz Pudzianowski in April, Eddie Hall has maintained his presence in combat sports while simultaneously keeping his YouTube audience entertained.
The timing of Hall’s next competitive appearance remains uncertain, though multiple potential matchups have been discussed. A rematch with Pudzianowski has generated interest following their brief but decisive encounter, while other possibilities include facing skilled grapplers or even taking on multiple opponents in a single evening.
For now, Hall appears content exploring different sports and creating engaging content rather than committing to intensive training camps.
